How do I get my child on a FIRST LEGO League team?

This is the question that we hear most often from families. We recommend checking with your local school or community group to see if they have a team or if there is interest in starting one. You can also check the FIRST official website team search page to identify teams already started in your community. Because of FIRST privacy guidelines, we cannot distribute coach contact information directly to inquiring families. We highly recommend considering starting a new team.

Benefits of starting your own team

  1. You select the participants
  2. You select the meeting times and location
  3. You get to inspire the next generation of innovators

Becoming a Coach

People of all backgrounds and abilities make successful coaches. Adults act as a facilitator and learn alongside the youth. Each team kit comes with the resources needed for the season’s challenge, along with several online resources.

Iowa State Engineering Outreach also actively supports coaches with optional in-person trainings (Summer Coach Camp), virtual Coach Meet Ups, an Iowa Coaches Facebook group, and a bi-weekly newsletter.

Team Blast Newsletter

We send out a biweekly newsletter to adult coaches, mentors, administrators, and friends.

When a team is registered for the season via the FIRST Dashboard, coaches and administrators are automatically added to this list.
