Scholar Profiles

Allison Austin

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Allison is from Johnston, Iowa.

In addition to getting her undergraduate degree in software engineering, she plans get a certificate in leadership studies. She is an officer in the Society of Women Engineers, serving as one of the three presidents. During the summer 2019 she was one of the 19 undergraduate students who participated in the Leadership Studies Program annual study abroad trip to Stockholm, Sweden. Following graduation she hopes to be employed in programming and coding projects and work with other people to problem solve and better the community.

Joe Beary 

Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering

Joe is from Lovilia, Iowa.

Within the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department Joe is specializing in Agricultural Engineering.  He is the first member of his family to attend college. Influencing his decision to attend Iowa State University was his selection to receive a 2018 Iowa 4-H Foundation Scholarship.

Emmit Benitez

Emmit is from Mason City, Iowa.

Emmit was on the College of Engineering Dean’s list both fall 2018 and spring 2019 semesters.

Olivia Bogle

Mechanical Engineering

Olivia is from Le Roy, Illinois.

Olivia is majoring in mechanical engineering with minors in biomedical engineering and Spanish. She chose to study engineering because of the impact that it can make in the world and the mixture of creativity and mathematics.  She is actively involved in the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority, hockey pep band, and serving as a First-Year Honors mentor. She was on the College of Engineering Dean’s list both fall 2018 and spring 2019 semesters. Fall semester 2019 she plans to take 19 credits and hopes to graduate in the Spring of 2022. She wants to pursue a career in mechanical engineering with emphasis on biomedical engineering immediately after obtaining her bachelor’s degree, but may later return to school for her master’s degree in engineering.

Lucas Bratland

Mechanical Engineering

Lucas is from Aurora, Illinois.

In addition to majoring in Mechanical Engineering, he is pursuing a Math minor. He chose engineering due to his interest and love of helping others.  Outside academics, he is Secretary of his residence, Stevenson House in Birch Hall and a member of the Iowa State Wrestling Club. He was on the College of Engineering Dean’s list both fall 2018 and spring 2019 semesters. He is an Eagle Scout and plans to continue volunteer activities and assisting others after receiving his under graduate degree and entering the workforce.

Sadie Brockett

Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering

Sadie is from Reinbeck, Iowa.

Sadie chose to pursue a degree in Construction Engineering with a Highway emphasis because of her interest in working on roads and bridges as it would provide something tangible to show for her work. She chose to attend Iowa State University for my education because she has several relatives who received their engineering degrees from ISU. She interviewed with industry representatives at the fall 2018 and spring 2019 engineering career fair, which reinforced her decision to major in Construction Engineering.  She is pursuing a minor in Leadership Studies and involved in academic organizations including the Iowa State Associated General Contractors Student Chapter, Society of Women Engineers, and the Honor’s Program. She is also a volunteer with Colleges Against Cancer and with Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. She was on the College of Engineering Dean’s list both fall 2018 and spring 2019 semesters. Other activities  include participating in the Lyrica – Women’s Choir, Intramural Ultimate Frisbee and Soccer, and the Hammocking Club. During the summer 2019 she had an internship with Peterson Contractors, Inc.

Ava Depping

Mechanical Engineering

Ava is from Madrid, Iowa.

When Ava first decided to attend Iowa State, she was unsure of what I wanted major in but knew her interests aligned with engineering and I felt Iowa State was the best place to discover her passions. After her first semester she declared Mechanical Engineering as her major and plans to graduate fall semester 2021. She hopes to continue graduate studies after earning her bachelors degree. She has involved herself in numerous extra-curricular activities while maintaining a 4.0 grade point average.  She is a member of the Honors Philanthropy Committee, helping plan and organize events for Honors students. In the Science Explorations Club, she interacts with elementary girls to assist in science-based activities and generate interest in STEM fields and has been elected President of the club for 2019-20. She is also a member of the Cantamus Women’s Choir. She works as an undergraduate researcher in the Department of Apparel, Events, and Hospitality Management preforming research on incorporating conductive embroidery into wearable textiles.

Zoe Follman

Materials Science and Engineering

Zoe is from Crystal Lake, Illinois.

Zoe is majoring in Materials Engineering. She chose this major after doing undergraduate research on the seal strength of recycled packages. She realized she enjoyed food packaging and has chosen to pursue a polymers specialization within Materials Engineering. Outside academics she is involved in band and a member of Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society. After graduation she hopes to work for a food company.

Jonathan Gannon

Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering

Jonathan is from Coralville, Iowa.

Jonathan was influenced to major in Civil Engineering by his grandfather, a Civil Engineer and a graduate from Iowa State University.  He also had older siblings who attended Iowa State. Within Civil Engineering he has not yet decided on a specific area of emphasis, but has a strong interest in the geotechnical field. In addition to his academic studies, he is a member of the track and field team specializing in the discus throw and is learning the hammer throw. He likes being on the track and field team because he has a passion for the sports and considers it an opportunity to get his mind off of school work. After graduation he hopes to work for a company that will provide him the opportunity to work outside the office and not be constrained to a desk.

Hannah Gebur

Chemical and Biological Engineering

Hannah is from Owatonna, Minnesota.

Hanna chose to attend Iowa State because she could see myself being successful here and fell in love with the campus on her first visit. Her goal is to get good grades and take advantage of other opportunities that may be available at Iowa State. Through the Freshman Honors Program, she has had opportunity to conduct research with Dr. Luke Roling on computational catalysis and hopes to get an internship or co-op during her junior year. In addition to academics she is a member of the GROOVE drumline club and part of the Music Ministry at St. Thomas Aquinas Church. She participates in several intramurals teams with her basketball team making it to the 2019 championship game. She is also active in the Society of Women Engineers, Women in Science and Engineering, and the Youth Sports Outreach programs on campus. Following graduation she hopes to get a job allowing her to contribute to decreasing pollution and making things more eco-friendly, thereby making a positive and lasting impact on the environment.

Joseph Holtkamp

Joseph is from Donnellson, Iowa.

Joseph came to Iowa State University from a rural Iowa community and chose to specialize in Agricultural Engineering. Following graduation he hopes to have career in agriculture or an agricultural related industry.

Joseph Kim

Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering

Joseph is from Wheaton, Illinois.

In addition to academics, Joseph is undertaking research with Dr. Richard Stone in the study of human performance augmentation/ergonomics. He indicates that this undergraduate research opportunity was one of the reasons why he decided to attend Iowa State.  He is also involved in extracurricular activities including Engineers Without Borders, the Presidential Leadership Class, and is Treasurer of the Iowa State chapter of the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF). After receiving his undergraduate degree, he plans to apply to MD/PhD programs. His goal is to combine his knowledge of Industrial Engineering and healthcare to become a research professor studying the ergonomics of surgery.

James Lydon

James is planning to combine his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering with an MBA. He was on the College of Engineering Dean’s list both fall 2018 and spring 2019 semesters.

Nicole Martindale

Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering

Nicole is from Gretna, Nebraska.

Nicole’s involvement in activities expands across a variety of areas.  Academically, she was on the College of Engineering Dean’s list both fall 2018 and spring 2019 semesters.  During spring semester she was a presenter at the 13th Symposium on Undergraduate Research & Creative Expression.  She views her involvement in clubs and organizations are the best way to develop connections and friendships. She is a member of the Iowa State Women’s soccer team, the NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).  Within the American Society of Civil Engineers student organization she is part of the concrete canoe team and within the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) she serves on the special events committee. In addition she is a member of the Chi Epsilon Civil Engineers Honors Society, and a local church.  Following graduation she hopes to apply the knowledge, skills, and passion she has for Civil Engineering to help society and the environment.

Nicole McCullough

Materials Science and Engineering

Nicole is from Lincoln, Nebraska.

Nicole chose to attend Iowa State’s due to its outstanding engineering program, the beautiful campus and student organizations. She originally planned to major in Chemical Engineering. However, when she learned more about materials engineering, she knew that it was the right path for her. She was on the College of Engineering Dean’s list both fall 2018 and spring 2019 semesters.  She is involved in the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), serving as the Community Outreach Chair and is responsible for organizing and leading events, as well as planning activities and presentations. She has not yet decided what she is going to do after graduation.

Micah Mundy

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Micah is from Clive, Iowa.

Micah was on the College of Engineering Dean’s list spring semester 2019. He indicated that one of his favorite learning opportunity has been the Cyclone Rocketry club, where he collaborated with future Aerospace Engineers to write a program to test the rockets being built for competition.

Denise Orege

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Denise is from Johannesburg, South Africa.

In addition to majoring in Electrical Engineering Denise is minoring in Music. She enjoys pursuing these degrees and her time at Iowa State University. She was on the College of Engineering Dean’s list fall semester 2018. As an international student she is very appreciative of the opportunities offered by Iowa State University that were not available in her in her home country. With regard to her music minor, she began playing the piano at age 6 and has enjoyed every minute. During spring semester 2019 she was one of the performers in the Department of Music and Theater Piano Studio Recital.  She has not yet decided what career she may pursue after graduation, but believes her degree from Iowa State will set her on the right path for life.

Kundan Paudyal

Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering

Kundan is from Kathmandu, Nepal.

Kundan chose to study at Iowa State University because of his interest in mathematics and engineering from an early age. He was on the College of Engineering Dean’s list both fall 2018 and spring 2019 semesters. He is an Academic Program for Excellence for Engineers (APEXE) scholar, a program designed to increase the success rate of incoming multicultural, first-year engineering students.  As an APEXE scholar Kundan works 15 hours a week in the laboratory, developing critical skills to help him excel in his engineering studies. Following graduation he plans to specialize in manufacturing in the field of aerospace.

Lucas Pearson

Mechanical Engineering

Lucas is from Prior Lake, Minnesota.

Lucas was influenced to study engineering at Iowa State University by his grandfather who worked for Honeywell as a microelectronics engineer. Within Mechanical Engineering he plans to focus on materials engineering. He is a member of the Solidworks/CAD student organizations.

Luke Schaeckenbach

Aerospace Engineering

Luke is from Iowa City, Iowa

In addition to his academic studies. Luke is a member of the fabrication team for the Eagle Eye’ project, which has a goal to make a proof of concept vehicle that could operate in the Martian atmosphere while being simple to operate and relatively cheap to produce. He is a member of the Ames Collegiate Chess Club serving as Treasurer.  He is also active in the Cornerstone Church, a member of The SALT Company on the Iowa State campus.

Claire Schendl

Aerospace Engineering

Claire is from Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Claire knew she wanted to study at Iowa State the moment she visited the campus. Both of her parents attended Iowa State and met in their dorm freshman year. She chose to pursue a degree in Aerospace Engineering because of a long time fascination in planes and rockets and the atmosphere in general. She wanted to major in something that pushed her to work harder than she ever had, and indicates Aerospace Engineering has exceeded her expectations. Outside academics, she is involved in the Women in Science and Engineering organization, Society of Women Engineers, and her Sorority, Alpha Omicron Pi. She notes that the past year at Iowa State was full of many memories and experiences, one of which was receiving a 4.0 GPA her first semester. After graduation she would like to get a job, such as Boeing in Chicago, to be close to her family.

 

 Mark Schomers

Chemical and Biological Engineering

Mark is from Omaha, Nebraska.

Growing up, Mark was always intrigued by how things worked and how to improve them. This interest brought him to Iowa State to study engineering. He was on the College of Engineering Dean’s list the spring 2019 semester.  Upon graduation, he plans to work in research and development and hopes to apply his skills to make the world a better and safer place.

Emma Schwarck

Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering

Emma is from Spencer, Iowa.

Emma decided to attend Iowa State University because of its engineering programs, especially Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering. When she visited the ABE department, she felt at home.  Growing up she was in 4-H and showing livestock made her decide to focus on post-harvest processing systems and animal feed processing. In addition to academics she is involved in the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers as well as The Salt Company. She is a member of the 2019 Fall Engineering Career Fair Executive Team, which will help organize and carryout the career fair.  She credits her involvement through on-campus activities and community service projects as helping her to grow as a person and a leader.

Maria Seymour

Maria is from Urbandale, Iowa.

Maria indicates that since she was little, her goal has been to go into the field of engineering. She chose to attend Iowa State University because of the community atmosphere and the academic opportunities. Outside academics, she is involved in the Iowa State chapter of the Society of Women Engineers and Science Explorations and is a member of her residence hall cabinet.

Dion Simon

Aerospace Engineering

Dion is from Dubuque, Iowa.

Dion was on the College of Engineering Dean’s list both fall 2018 and spring 2019 semesters. He is a cabinet officer of his residence, Matterson House in Wilson Hall. Through his studies and experiences at Iowa State, he hopes to gain the necessary skills and experience to bring innovation and change to the aerospace industry. His goal is to specialize in both the fields of aerodynamics and materials. With this knowledge, he hopes to help improve airplane designs by making them lighter and more aerodynamically efficient, thereby, reducing carbon emissions.

Kaitlin Steward

Kaitlin is fromManhattan, Kansas.

Kaitlin was on the College of Engineering Dean’s list both fall 2018 and spring 2019 semesters. In addition to her academic studies, she is Vice President of the Lutheran Campus Ministry student organization.  Upon graduating from Iowa State, she plans to pursue a graduate degree in Biomedical Engineering.

Linh Tong

Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering

Linh is from Hanoi, Vietnam.

Linh noted that as he was growing up, his interest in human activities involving natural systems increased. Having witnessing changes in other countries due to human activity he wanted to major in an area that could help address these concerns. This led him to enroll in the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering program at Iowa State.  Academically, he was in the highest 2% of Engineering Freshman spring semester 2019 and on the College of Engineering Dean’s List fall 2018. He is a member of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineers and the Biological Systems Engineering Student Organization and enjoys participation in their volunteer activities.

Ryan Utterback

Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering

Ryan is from Ankeny, Iowa.

Ryan chose Iowa State University because of its prestigious college of engineering, combined with its relative affordability. He was on the College of Engineering Dean’s list both fall 2018 and spring 2019 semesters. He is performing undergraduate research with Dr. Frank Peters and is Outreach Chair for the Institute of Industrial and System Engineers student organization. When he graduates, he would like to put his newly learned knowledge in operations research and optimization to work through employment in a financial, insurance, technology or aerospace company.

Macie VanNurden

Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering

Macie is from River Falls, Wisconsin.

Macie grew up in a single-parent household early in her childhood and is the first member of her family to attend college. She highly values the opportunity for a college education. She was on the College of Engineering Dean’s list both fall 2018 and spring 2019 semesters. Involvement outside academics, includes being President of Tiffany House in Geoffroy Hall.  Following completion of  her undergraduate degree in Industrial Engineering she plans to earn an MBA.

Caden Washburn

Caden was on the College of Engineering Dean’s list both fall 2018 and spring 2019 semesters. In addition to academics, he is an officer in his residence serving as Academic Chair for Livingston House in Helser Hall.
