Interest Areas

Dr Raman is teaming with colleagues in Agricultural & Biosystems Engineering, Agronomy, Food Science and Human Nutrition, and other ISU departments on projects related to chemical and physical pretreatment of ligno- cellulosic feedstocks and on methods of rapidly assaying the efficacy of such pretreatments. Specific ongoing projects include the examination of ammonia steeping as a pretreatment method for switchgrass (project leader Dr Rob Anex, ABE), studies on the net energy balance of ultrasonic pretreatment of ammonia-steeped switchgrass (project leader Dr David Grewell, ABE), and development of a rapid, three-parameter assay for lignocellulosic feedstocks (project leader Dr Ken Moore, Agronomy). He recently published work demonstrating an algorithm capable of detecting mosquito flight sounds, and his research team has built a stand-alone device using this approach that is currently being field-tested next to conventional mosquito traps.
