The Muses

The Muses were restored as part of the renovation. The four muses, over 8’ tall in height, represent the departments of the college at that time: mining engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering and physics.

Images of the muses are featured on the 2nd floor. The conservator determined there were at least two sculptors, if not three that did the original work.

Each muse is looking a different direction, and hairstyles, clothing, and faces are different. The details are amazing – there are adjustment knobs in the sextant and transit held by the Civil muse, as well as individual surveying pins. The mechanical muse is holding an Edison light  bulb with wiring down to the lead battery at her feet in addition to a gear and anvil.
