“Iowa State has a good aerospace program and a great job fair,” Alex explains as his reasons for choosing Iowa State. He plans to bring his expertise in project management to a lot of group projects with the goal of bringing about success and change. He has honed these skills as a delivery person and in low-level management positions at Home Base Delivery. Alex enjoys spending time with friends, cross-country, and ultimate frisbee.

Alicia chose Iowa State engineering because “Iowa State has an amazing engineering program.” She has served as a dietary aide at St. Dominic Villa and enjoys reading, singing, playing the piano, acting, and playing sports for fun.

Lizette selected Iowa State because the engineering program is “a very good program with many opportunities for its engineers.” She spent part of her summer in the SPEED program at Iowa State. Lizette is looking forward to studying abroad and to “helping solve the problems of tomorrow.”

“Iowa State has a really good engineering program, and beyond that, the culture and environment of the school far exceeded my other choices,” explained Brenda when asked why she chose Iowa State Engineering. Brenda is involved in many programs on campus including honors societies, Women in Mechanical Engineering, Engineers without Borders, and serving as a peer mentor for E2020. She has had experience in research labs and as an intern at Caterpillar and is pursuing minors in bioengineering and math. After graduation, Brenda hopes to find a career where she can make a global impact helping the people of developing nations.

Todd chose Iowa State because it has a good engineering program and he was familiar with the campus and Ames area. He had a unique opportunity to use his creative skills during his internship with the Iowa Butter Cow. He helped sculpt the lunar landing display for the 2009 Iowa State Fair butter sculpture. Todd owned and operated a photography business where he honed his skills in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Lightroom. He enjoys traveling, reading, and soccer. Todd is looking forward to leadership opportunities, meeting new people, and making engineering connections. Someday he may pursue a master’s degree.

“Iowa State was the best choice for my future,” says Benjamin of his selection of Iowa State. He served as a cook at Hidden Valley Golf Course and enjoys running, sports, and being outdoors. Benjamin anticipates learning new things, meeting new people, and exploring possibilities for his future. One day he hopes to hold a patent for his own invention.

“I chose engineering at Iowa State because the university has really good culture and a nice environment,” says Donathan when asked why he chose Iowa State engineering. He is looking forward to learning how to find solutions to the challenges the world will be facing. In his free time, Donathan enjoys traveling, going to movies, dining out, and playing games with his friends.

“I was impressed with Iowa State’s strong engineering program, the faculty, and the amazing campus,” explains Ryan. “I expect the program to provide me with opportunities to become a successful engineer, leader, and entrepreneur.” He plans to also pursue an MBA and to someday own his own engineering firm. Ryan is a member of the Elks National Foundation Scholars and enjoys listening to music, traveling, reading online, and Youtube.

“Iowa State is awesome,” Andy declares as his reason for choosing Iowa State. He has worked as a customer service clerk at Hy-Vee and enjoys relaxing with his friends. He has joined the TKE fraternity and is looking forward to making new friends. Andy aspires to make a difference by working with water or air treatment. Or maybe by rebuilding parts of the Middle East with the military. Or maybe by working on other structures the military needs. Connecting his two passions, making a difference and traveling, is his ultimate goal. Upon graduation from Iowa State Andy anticipates, “I’ll be ready to fix the world.”

Jason chose Iowa State because of the engineering program and the fact that he really likes the campus. His interest in construction engineering grew as he spent time as a construction worker in the family business, Wenger Construction. Jason enjoys sports and has skydived and competed in a demolition derby. He also likes to spend time hanging out with his friends.

“ISU is ranked really high for engineering schools, and it just happens to be close to home,” explains Ethan McGuire when asked why he chose Iowa State engineering. Ethan had also served as a researcher at Iowa State prior to becoming a full-time student here. During this internship, he honed his skills in lab procedures and the storage and handling of chemicals. In his spare time, Ethan enjoys being outdoors fishing, hunting, and camping.

“I heard from the engineers that I worked with that Iowa State was one of the most prestigious engineering schools, so I checked it out. They were really helpful,” says Eric. And so he chose Iowa State engineering. Eric has served as a CAD DRAFTMAN and as an inspector and surveyor for the City of Cedar Falls Engineering Department. Eric’s core expertise includes surveying, CAD drafting, and construction inspection. In his personal time, Eric enjoys playing sports and hanging out with friends. He is looking forward to becoming a licensed engineer.

“Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” This is Moses’ favorite quote and is fitting for an aspiring engineer. He chose Iowa State because “it’s one of the best schools in the nation.” Moses works with Hope 4 Africa and plans to use his engineering skills to solve problems in this country. Moses spends his free time playing soccer and beach volleyball.

Karly chose Iowa State University to pursue her engineering degree because of “the dignified reputation the college possesses throughout the industry and because of the many industry connections and career fairs that are available to all students.” In her free time Karly enjoys traveling, reading, running, rock climbing, and camping. “I like to spend as much time outside as possible,” she noted.

Sam KrugerSam Kruger

Samuel “Sam” Kruger, 20, of Sibley, a sophomore in civil engineering at Iowa State University, passed away October 8, 2010, due to injuries sustained in an auto accident.

“The loss of Sam Kruger is felt by all of us in the college. He touched the lives of many students, staff, and faculty through his work in recruiting and learning communities. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”

Sam chose Iowa State engineering because of the rich history in the engineering department. He was an entrepreneur who owned Lil’ Kruges Mowing. His expertise was varied and included skills from lawn maintenance to editing video on his computer. Sam enjoyed sports, especially basketball and running, playing cards and board games, and watching movies.
