The Engineering Leadership Program was launched in 2006 at Iowa State University. Its leadership focus inspired and informed the leadership development pillar of the E2020 Scholars Program.

A number of initiatives across the U.S. were launched in response to the NAE’s report.

One of the earliest was the University of Wisconsin’s introductory course on the engineering grand challenges.

Since then, Purdue University and other universities have implemented engineer of 2020 programs.

The Grand Challenge Scholars Program (GCSP), a collaboration of Duke University, Olin College of Engineering, and the University of Southern California, is an NAE-sponsored version of Iowa State’s NSF-funded E2020 Scholars Program. Several universities have established programs affiliated with GCSP.
