CIVL 456: Wastewater Treatment
Homework #4- Fall 1996
Due Date: 18 September 1996
Part 1
Design an aerated grit chamber installation (with two parallel tanks)
for an average
wastewater flow rate of 0.3 cubic meters per second, and a peak
flow rate of 1.0 cubic meters per second.
The depth (average water depth) should be 3 meters,
the width:depth ratio should
be 1.5:1, and the detention time at peak flow should be 3.5 minutes.
Each of the parallel tanks will carry one-half the peak flow.
The aeration rate is 0.4 cubic meters (air) per minute per meter of
tank length. Determine the dimensions of the grit chamber and total
air requirement (all answers in metric units).
