Heat treatments
   Increases hardenability (the higher the carbon
content the better the hardenability)
n Quenching – medium or high carbon content
n heat to critical temperature, dip in oil or water
n atomic structure, magnetism and electrical resistance
change
n Tempering – quench first, reheat then slowly cool
n Annealing – heat to critical temperature and slowly cool
n eliminates residual stresses created during forming
the part
