n Increases hardenability (the higher the carbon content the better the hardenability)
nQuenching – medium or high carbon content
nheat to critical temperature, dip in oil or water
natomic structure, magnetism and electrical resistance change
nTempering – quench first, reheat then slowly cool
nAnnealing – heat to critical temperature and slowly cool
neliminates residual stresses created during forming the part
