		n A need must exist for the machine n Search for existing machines that may fulfill the need; search for information that may be useful in the design n State the function and goals for the machine n Outline the criteria and constraints of the design n Begin ideation and invention stage (synthesis) n Analyze the resulting design n Select machine components n Detail the design with drawings and specifications n Build and test the prototype n Produce the design
