Definitions
Machine
A collection of components that effectively transmit or transform forces, energy, motion, or loads for a specific purpose
Design
Applying mathematical and scientific principles in order to produce useful devices and processes
Machine Design
Calculating motions, forces, and or energy in order to size, specify geometry and materials for a collection of interrelated components that work safely and effectively together for a specific purpose

The Design Process
A need must exist for the machine
Search for existing machines that may fulfill the need; search for information that may be useful in the design
State the function and goals for the machine
Outline the criteria and constraints of the design
Begin ideation and invention stage (synthesis)
Analyze the resulting design
Select machine components
Detail the design with drawings and specifications
Build and test the prototype
Produce the design

Establishing a need
Design a pogo-stick for use by small children

Conduct a search for existing designs

Criteria:

Begin synthesis
Work in groups of three or four and begin sketching your proposed design
Include as many details as you have time
Anticipate what types of analysis would be necessary to demonstrate that all design constraints are met.
Iterate as you have time between now and our next meeting

Analyze design
Look at critical loadings
Make and clearly state important assumptions
Size parts and establish geometry based on what loading analysis suggests
Specify materials based on loadings

Select component parts
Any parts from stock will greatly reduce cost
Any required machining will increase cost

Detail the design
parts drawings
assembly drawings
dimensions
tolerances

Build, test and take into production
Are there manufacturing concerns?
What testing conditions should be set up?
How much testing is warranted?
How do we establish a factor of safety for this type of device?
