The system we are designing may lend itself better to one expression of analysis than another. For example, if we are designing a refrigerator, an energy analysis would be the best approach.  On the other hand, if we are designing a drive train, force and motion analysis would benefit us most.
Being able to determine stress, strain, and deflection will help us pick appropriate geometries and appropriate materials.
