What is SWE University?
SWE University is your opportunity as a high school junior or senior female to see what it is like to live and study on Iowa State University’s campus. SWE University participants will get to explore the campus, learn more about engineering, connect with current students and other SWE U participants, and stay overnight in an Iowa State residence hall. SWE University will conclude with a “graduation” banquet dinner where parents/guardians can join their student and view their final project.
Who is eligible to apply to SWE University?
Female students in their junior or senior year of high school are eligible to apply to SWE University.
How do I apply?
Applications are now closed.
When applications become available please Click the “Application” tab located along the top of the page and complete all of the fields. Click the “Submit” button when you have completed the application in its entirety.
You will need a letter of recommendation to complete your application. Please let the person you would like to write your letter know before submitting your application. Recommendation writers will receive an email with a link to upload their letter of support electronically after your application has been submitted online. Letters can also be uploaded here.
Note: The application DOES NOT allow for you to save your responses and return at a later time. Edits cannot be made to an application once it has been submitted. Please ensure that you have completed the whole application before clicking the submit button.
When are applications due?
Applications and letters of recommendations are closed.
When will I find out if I’ve been accepted to SWE University?
Applicants will be accepted and notified on a rolling basis from April through May, we are reserving spots for 40 women, make sure you get your application in sooner rather than later.
Is there a cost to attend SWE University?
Yes, there is a $400 registration fee that covers all of your scheduled activities, meals, and housing. (Upon acceptance to SWE U, checks should be made payable to “Program for Women in Science and Engineering”). You should still bring a little extra money for Iowa State souvenirs or any non-scheduled activities.
There is an additional cost of $7.50/guest for those parents/guardians who wish to join their student at the “graduation” banquet.
