Mark A. Hughes

Dr. Mark A. Hughes is the Director of Pyrolysis Research at Phillips 66. Mark received a Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Queen’s University of Belfast in Northern Ireland in 2001. He went on to obtain a Master of Science Degree in Polymer Engineering in 2003 before completing a PhD in Chemistry at the University of Montana in 2007. Mark joined ConocoPhillips Research and Development, Bartlesville, Oklahoma, in 2007. He spent two years developing and commercializing technology for the removal of inorganics from water and hydrocarbon streams associated with crude oil processing. In 2009, Mark transitioned to an operations role at the 190,000 bpd Ponca City refinery in north central Oklahoma where he specialized on furnace tube fouling mitigation and crude oil compatibility. In 2011, Mark returned to ConocoPhillips R&D to lead the Fast Pyrolysis and Renewable Diesel technology development effort, and has continued in this role in the Technology division of the recently spun-off advantaged downstream energy company, Phillips 66.
