Information

Dr. Adam Mullis is an Assistant Teaching Professor in Chemical and Biological Engineering at Iowa State University. He is also a member of the Biomedical Engineering Program. He earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from North Carolina State University and a Ph.D. in Chemical and Biological Engineering from Iowa State University. Following his doctoral work, he completed an IRACDA postdoctoral fellowship at Tufts University, where he integrated research with training in evidence-based teaching practices.

Dr. Mullis’s research background spans interdisciplinary areas at the interface of chemical engineering and biomedical science. During his Ph.D., he focused on the rational design of antimicrobial nanomedicines, while his postdoctoral work involved engineering three-dimensional human tissue models to study Alzheimer’s disease. Although his current role is fully teaching-focused, these experiences continue to inform his approach to problem-solving and instruction in the classroom.

A central goal of Dr. Mullis’s teaching is to help students reflect on the broader impacts of engineering practice. He encourages learners to think critically about how their work affects not only their organizations, but also their colleagues, communities, and the environment. Through this approach, he aims to prepare students to become thoughtful and responsible engineers who are equipped to make meaningful contributions to society.
