Majoring in biomedical engineering can also prepare students for medical school or other advanced studies.<\/p>\n<p>The interdisciplinary biomedical engineering major will leverage faculty expertise across the college in the area of engineered medicine and cross-campus expertise in biology, kinesiology and biomedical sciences.<\/p>\n<p>The major was approved by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa in February 2023. Enrollment has begun with a limited student cohort as faculty are hired and new lab spaces are finished to support core courses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Graduates of the biomedical engineering curriculum should have, at the time of graduation:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li>An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.<\/li>\n<li>An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.<\/li>\n<li>An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.<\/li>\n<li>An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.<\/li>\n<li>An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.<\/li>\n<li>An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.<\/li>\n<li>An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>The objectives of the biomedical engineering program at Iowa State University are to produce graduates who:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Will excel in careers as biomedical engineers working in industries related to pharmaceutical development and production, medical device design and manufacturing, and disease diagnostics and medical imaging.<\/li>\n<li>Will successfully pursue research and advanced studies in biomedical engineering or other engineering fields and in related professional fields such as medicine, law and business.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Is the program accredited?<\/h2>\n<p>As with other programs in the College of Engineering at Iowa State University, we will seek ABET accreditation.
