When using a.m. and p.m., use the periods with a space before the a or p. If small caps are used for the letters (second choice, but to be avoided if possible), no periods are necessary. Also, midnight and noon should be used instead of 12:00 a.m. (or m.) and 12:00 p.m., respectively.
