Scholar Profiles

Mason Berhenke

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Mason is from Olathe, Kansas.  Within his Computer Engineering major he plans to put emphasis on design of integrated circuits to help in the development of future everyday devices such as cell phones and computers.  He is a member of the Iowa State University Honors Program and on the College of Engineering Deans List.   After graduation he hopes to pursue a career in computer engineering and start his own computer hardware business.

Elena Ewaldz

Materials Science and Engineering

Elena is from Rockford, Illinois.  Within her major she plans to specialize in polymers and ceramics. She chose to attend Iowa State University because of the strength of its engineering programs and the quality of its professors.  She is on the College of Engineering Deans List and in the top 2% of her class.  In addition to her academic studies, she participates in the ISU program for Women in Science and Engineering and Materials Advantage, a pre-professional society for materials engineering majors and those interested in materials science and engineering.  She also participates in intramural sports.  After graduation she intends to attend graduate school or would like to pursue a career in the textile industry.

Jared is from Norway, Iowa.   He is a member of the Iowa State University Honors Program and on the College of Engineering Deans List.  After graduation he hopes to earn a masters degree and pursue a career in industrial engineering with a reputable company.

David Gardner

Chemical and Biological Engineering

David is from Marion, Iowa.  In addition to his Chemical Engineering major, he is pursuing a minor in Applied Statistics.  He is a member of the Iowa State University Honors Program and on the College of Engineering Deans List. David is also a member of the Freshman Leaders In Engineering, serving as the Chair of Tutoring/Mentoring, and the Iowa State Freshman Council, serving on the social justice committee.  He is involved in undergraduate research related to zeolites.  He is a member of Acacia Fraternity.  After graduation he hopes to pursue a career with the 3M company working on membranes for photovoltaic cells.

Dillan Glock

Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering

Dillan is from Ames, Iowa.  She is majoring in Biological Systems Engineering with a minor in Spanish.  She chose to study at Iowa State University because its agricultural and engineering programs are among the best in the country and dedicated to environmental awareness and research in this area.  She is a member of the Iowa State University Honors Program and on the College of Engineering Deans List.  She is a student member of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers and Vice president of the ISU Biological Systems Engineering Club.  She is also a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta/Phi Eta Sigma Honor Societies.  After graduation she hopes to combine her knowledge of agriculture and the environment with he ability to speak Spanish to help people in need in Latin America.

Alicia Guzman

Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering

Alicia is from Guaynabo, Porto Rico.  She is a 2011-12 National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar of Excellence in Academic Achievement.  She chose to study Industrial Engineering at ISU because of the quality of the program and the opportunity for study abroad and internships.  She is on the College of Engineering Deans List.  After graduation she hopes to pursue a professional career in industrial engineering and help people as a productive member of American society.

William Hendricks

Materials Science and Engineering

William is from Rapid City, South Dakota.  He is a member of the Iowa State University Honors Program and on the College of Engineering Deans List.  After graduation he plans to continue his education and earn a PhD degree in Materials Science and Engineering. He hopes to pursue a career in improving alternative sources of energy particularly in the areas of transparent solar panels and development of materials to contain nuclear waste.

Jacqueline Holtz

Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering

Jacqueline is from Fox River Grove, Illinois.  She is majoring in Biological Systems Engineering.  She is on the College of Engineering Deans List.  In addition to her academic studies, Jacqueline is the Sustainability Chair for Haber House – Helser Hall.  She is also an active member of the ISU Chapter of the Society of Women Engineers.  After graduation she hopes to pursue a career helping people by improving the engineering of food.

Mechanical Engineering

Melynda is from White Bear Lake, Minnesota.  She is on the College of Engineering Deans List and is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.  In addition to her academic studies, she is an undergraduate research student in the Virtual Reality Applications Center and an active member of the ISU Society of Automotive Engineers Formula Race Car Team.  Industrial experience includes being a summer intern with Cummins Central Power in Des Moines, Iowa.  After graduation she plans to continue graduate study then undertake a career in the automotive industry.

Justin is from White Bear Lake, Minnesota.  He is a member of the Iowa State University Honors Program.  After graduation he hopes to pursue a career in project design with a company such as Garmin or Mercury Marine and then return to academia for a MS and PhD in order to teach and conduct research as a university professor.

Sara is from Marion, Iowa.  She is majoring in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Technical Communication.  She is a member of the Iowa State University Honors Program.  She is a student member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.  After graduation she hopes to pursue a career in renewable energy and help preserve nature for future generations.

Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering

Corona is from Holmen, Wisconsin.  She is majoring in Civil Engineering with a specific interest in bridge and building design. She is a recipient of a George Washington Carver Scholarship Award.  She is a member of the Iowa State University Honors Program and on the College of Engineering Deans List.  In addition to her academic studies, Corona is actively involved in the ISU Society of Women Engineers, Engineers for a Sustainable World an the Iowa State Rotaract Club.  She is also a Student Admission Representative and a member of the St. Thomas Aquinas student ministry.  After graduation she hopes to pursue a career in a private consulting firm somewhere in the mid-west.

Andrew Kitahara

Materials Science and Engineering

Andrew is from Liberty, Missouri.  He is majoring in Materials Engineering with a minor in Energy Systems.  He is a member of the Iowa State University Honors Program.  Following graduation he plans to continue his academic studies and earn a PhD degree.  He is particularly interested in doing research on electrochemistry applied to photovoltaic solar cells and electrical energy storage devices.  He hopes to make a contribution to the goal of global society achieving a fully sustainable future.

Tate Klocke

Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering

Tate grew up on his family’s farm in Calhoun County, Iowa.  As a youth he was active in 4-H and received a 2012 State 4-H Scholarship to help support his studies at ISU.  He is a student member of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, serving as the student branch representative to the Engineering Student Council.  He is on the College of Engineering Deans List.  He plans to undertake a coop or internship in industry during his junior year.  After graduation he hopes to pursue a career in industry as an Agricultural Engineering or join his family’s farming business.

Tiffany Lam

Chemical and Biological Engineering

Tiffany is from Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  She is majoring in Chemical Engineering with a minor is Music. She is a member of the Iowa State University Honors Program.  She is a recipient of a George Washington Carver Scholarship and a member of the George Washington Carver Academy.  In addition to her academic studies, Tiffany is a member of numerous student organizations, including Freshman Leaders in Engineering, Minds of Tomorrow, Science Explorations and is the Fundraising Coordinator for the ISU Asian Pacific American Awareness Coalition.  She is also an undergraduate research assistant, a member of the ISU Symphony Orchestra and a volunteer at the Margaret Sloss Women’s Center.  After graduation she hopes to continue with graduate studies and undertake a career helping others.

Omar Longou

Mechanical Engineering

Omar is from Solon, Iowa.  He is a member of the Iowa State University Honors Program.  His is particularly interested in the field of renewable energy.  In addition to his academic studies, Omar is active in outdoor activities including snowboarding and soccer. To gain research experience he plans to undertake a summer internship at the University of Iowa characterizing model wind turbines.  After graduation he hopes to work at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado in the development of wind turbines or solar panels.

Laurel is from Minneapolis, Minnesota.  She chose to attend Iowa State University because she felt it would provide her a excellent education and the opportunity to learn and grow as an engineer.  After graduation he hopes to apply her knowledge of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering in agriculture on medical processes.

Brandon is from Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  His major is Construction Engineering.  He is a member of the Iowa State University Honors Program and on the College of Engineering Deans List.  In addition to his academic studies, Brandon is on the Iowa State University Track and Field team.  After graduation he hopes to pursue a career in the construction industry.

Samuel Sparland

Chemical and Biological Engineering

Samuel is from Johnston, Iowa.  His is studying for a double degree Chemical Engineering and Bio-chemistry.  He is a member of the Iowa State University Honors Program and on the College of Engineering Deans List.  In addition to his academic studies, Samuel is involved in numerous other activities including being Vice President of Niles-Foster House in Friley Hall, an At-large Representative on the Inter-Residence Hall Association, and Community Advisor to Hughes House in Eaton Hall. He has also served as a Committee Member for VEISHEA, Dance Marathon and the Homecoming Central Sub-committee of the Student Alumni Leadership Council.  Samuel was also member of the President’s Leadership Class, which meets weekly with the University President and his wife.  He is also doing undergraduate research on how polymers interact with biological tissues.

Elmer Tse

Aerospace Engineering

Elmer is from Derwood, Maryland.  He chose to study at Iowa State University as the result of his father and sister receiving degrees from ISU.  He was inspired to study Aerospace Engineer as the result of attending his sister’s graduation ceremony and hearing the Commence speaker Clayton Anderson talk about his perseverance in becoming as Astronaut.   He is a member of the Iowa State University Honors Program.  In addition to his academic studies, Elmer is the Corporate Relations Chair for the ISU student chapter of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the Social Chair for Livingston House in Helser Hall.

Dean Vanevery

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Dean is from Ames, Iowa.  His major is Electrical Engineering.  In addition to his academic studies, he is active in community service.  He is also Vice president of Member Education for his fraternity Beta Theta Pi and Co-president of the Emerging Greek Leadership Council.  Following graduation he hopes to work in Eastern Europe helping to develop and improve reliable energy systems.
