Balaji Narasimhan, Associate Dean for Research and Economic Development

Research drives engineering excellence at Iowa State University. Our diverse activities cut across molecular biology, quantum physics, medicine, and atmospheric and plant sciences, to name just a few. We conduct our research in outstanding facilities in areas such as bioengineering, materials science, virtual reality, and high performance computing.

We are guided by the 2050 Challenge, knowing that engineering research will play a central role in determining the well-being of our planet and the prosperity of its people.

Near-Ground Wind Measurements May Lessen Tornadic Destruction
If scientists and engineers can systematically measure the wind speeds within the first few tens or hundreds of feet from the ground as well as the loading effects of these winds on buildings and other structures during an extreme wind event such as a hurricane or a tornado, they will be better equipped to design these structures to resist those loads.
