From developing the next hit video game to creating software that runs new biomedical equipment, software engineering offers endless career possibilities in every industry—and you can make a difference in the lives of others along the way. Software engineers see projects through the entire process: planning, designing, testing and more. At each stage of product development, software engineers make sure programs interact efficiently and seamlessly with technology and hardware developed by other engineers. Our program offers you a chance to perform hands-on programming and problem solving during your first year. Our unique degree is created to provide you the opportunity of a lifetime.

Be greater than you imagine

Our program is administered jointly by the electrical and computer engineering department and computer science department—representing two different colleges at Iowa State. This unique arrangement provides a diverse educational opportunity that prepares you to change the world through innovations and advances in software technologies that you help to create. Learn multiple skills: You will learn how to blend your skills in computer science, engineering and math while working in teams, solving problems and managing projects. This education prepares you to be an important part of project teams, working with both the business and technology sides of organizations to meet the needs of end users. Hands-on experience: As a leader in the advancement of software engineering education, you will experience the creation of software from conception to assessment and work with professors on research projects in areas such as modern software systems, software design and software safety.
