Providing Experiences in Research for Undergraduate Students in Engineering (PERUSE)

DANSE: Distributed Data Analysis of Neutron Scattering Experiments

Project Title:
DANSE: Distributed Data Analysis of Neutron Scattering Experiments

Brief description of project:
We are developing software to analyze and interpret neutron diffraction data, esp. in Engineering Diffraction. This field deals with stress/strain measurements in engineering materials to be able to understand their deformation and predict their lifetime. The DANSE project uses existing code or develops new code on materials, mechanics, optimization algorithms, image analysis and so on. It covers a broad range of topics suitable for most engineering majors. This is a nationwide project that is at the forefront of Cyberinfrastructure development in the US. It involves researchers from 5 universities and many national labs. As such, it offers exciting opportunities for future employtment. Additional information about this project can be found here: http://wiki.cacr.caltech.edu/danse/index.php/Main_Page.

Appropriate Student Majors or Programs:
Aerospace; Computer; Electrical; Mechanical; Software

What are anticipated student tasks and responsibilities?
Students will develop and employ Python-based code. Sufficient initial training will be provided for each student. The code will be modular and perform small tasks that will be explained ahead of time. The student will also have numerous opportunities to learn about the science behind Engineering Diffraction and how it helps improve material performance.

Hours of work offered per week: 6-10
