Clair J. Moeller, vice president of transmission asset management for Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator, Inc., will present “An understanding of energy supply and demand in the United States” as the Engineering Policy and Leadership Institute continues its thematic year series of events.
Moeller’s presentation will take place on Thursday, November 6, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Howe Hall Alliant Energy-Lee Liu Auditorium on the Iowa State University campus. A roundtable discussion will follow, moderated by David Yepsen, political columnist for The Des Moines Register. This is the third event of the Energy Security and Sustainability thematic year.
With a focus on the economics of energy in the United States, Moeller will discuss how energy supply is determined by energy demand and how both of these variables factor into the price paid to heat homes, power vehicles, and charge consumer electronics. With the United States currently using 25 percent of a limited world supply of available energy, drastic changes will need to be made to accommodate its needs as billions of people in developing nations adopt energy-dependent lifestyles.
Moeller is responsible for transmission planning, transmission services, and tariff administration. He is a well-respected industry expert with more than 25 years of experience in the operation of power systems in the upper Midwest, and he is especially skilled at identifying and implementing best practices in transmission planning and operations. Moeller’s current assignment includes infrastructure planning in collaboration with the utilities that serve the 15 states and one Canadian province that constitute the Midwest ISO region.
Members of the roundtable include Doug Collins, an Iowa State University graduate who today is the executive director of ITC Midwest, an independent transmission company; Tom Kay, manager of interconnections and system studies at ComEd, an electric utility serving over 3.5 million customers in the northern one-third of Illinois; and Ralph Watts, a state representative in the Iowa General Assembly who worked for 31 years in the electric and gas utility business before retiring in 1997 from MidAmerican Energy Company.
