Engineering Policy and Leadership Institute

About EPLI

EPLI Board Meeting
James Balloun (left) makes a point to other industrial leaders at a meeting of the EPLI board in April.

The Engineering Policy and Leadership Institute was created to provide inroads for engineers to become more involved in policymaking at a national level. As engineers help to develop national policies that involve the use of technology, the pipeline of engineers who serve in elected and appointed roles at all levels of government will increase.  EPLI also teaches leadership skills to engineering students and promotes the importance of engagement in public policy issues.  In addition to their technical skills, these engineers will be better prepared for meeting future engineering challenges.

The institute is premised on the following beliefs:

  • Engineers need to become more aware of public policy issues and have a voice that is heard by decision makers in business and government.
  • Engineers need to have a stronger voice to effect change especially as it relates to the implementation of technologies to help solve critical needs of our society.
  • More engineers need to get involved in government to help pass laws that will be best for our society.
  • More engineers need to take on leadership roles in industry and government.

Funding support is from private and corporate sponsors.

EPLI acknowledges that engineers are the sole solution to resolving our nation’s problems, including issues directly related to science and engineering. Instead, EPLI aims to introduce engineers to their role in the policy process of our world. This includes, but is not limited to, advising lawmakers, operating on committees, and serving as elected officials.
