Interest AreasMy research experience lies in the application of economic concepts and statistical methods to problems and decisions in the transportation field. My research interests include: transportation planning and systems evaluation; transportation economics; transportation energy and sustainability; highway safety; and (critical) infrastructure management. My research work has contributed greatly to an enhanced understanding of the relationship between transportation and economic development; I have evaluated the impacts of highway infrastructure investments, implementation of behavioral safety countermeasures, and adoption of pricing or tax policies; I have developed advanced econometric models for the analysis and forecasting of travel demand; and successfully organized an active multidisciplinary research program involving the sustainability and resilience of transportation and energy systems.
My research interests and experience have been mostly interdisciplinary. Currently, I am collaborating with faculty in other departments in the College of Engineering in the 21st Century National Energy and Transportation Infrastructures Balancing Sustainability, Costs, and Resiliency (NETSCORE-21) research project. The goal of this research is to formulate optimal infrastructure designs in terms of future power generation technologies, energy transport and storage, and hybrid electric transportation systems with balance in sustainability, costs, and resiliency. This project is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) via the solicitation on Emerging Frontiers on Research and Innovations (EFRI) Resilient and Sustainable Infrastructures (RESIN) program.
I also have collaborated with faculty in the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering and an industry consortium on research in the areas of harvest, storage and transportation (HST) of biomass. Addressing HST issues is essential to the success of converting petroleum-based liquid fuels to bio-based liquid fuels. Furthermore, understanding the impacts of the development of the bio-based liquid fuels and wind power industries on highway infrastructure is essential to address the infrastructure support needs of these industries in a sustainable manner and ensure their long-run competitiveness. This was the topic of another research project, funded by the Iowa Highway Research Board, that investigates the physical and fiscal impacts of substituting imported energy with local and renewable resources (wind, biomass) in Iowa.
My past research work on highway safety includes: developing a safety planning tool for the City of Ames; evaluating Iowa's driver improvement program; evaluating the effectiveness of the localized deer herd management plans in reducing deer-vehicle crashes; and improving motorcycle safety in Iowa by enhancing motorcycle conspicuity awareness. Currently, I pursue an initiative to produce a culture of safety in the state of Iowa.
